We often talk about hiking in Georgia as one of the single greatest outdoor activities in which you can partake in...which is 100% true. However, while you’re hiking, it’s always important to take all of the necessary precautions to stay safe, such as staying on trails, knowing the conditions before you go, or making sure to carry enough water for the whole trek. While beautiful, the Mount Yonah Trail might just be the most dangerous hike in all of Georgia, and here are a few ways to stay safe during your next mountainside jaunt.
The Mount Yonah Trail in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest is one of the most popular hikes in Georgia—but also one of the most dangerous.
This 4.8-mile trail is heavily trafficked, and with such an intense elevation gain, it’s easy to see why this beauty could become deadly so fast.
A few years back, a teenager who was hiking the trail slipped and plummeted to her death, falling over 600-feet.
In addition, just last year a woman fell 300-feet to her death while hiking with her son, which marked the third fall resulting in death from this mountain in the past 15 years.
Yonah Mountain is an incredibly steep hike, which becomes exceedingly dangerous especially when the conditions from a rainy day end up making the rocks extra slippery.
Pairing the moisture on the rocks with the steepness of the edge of the mountain creates some treacherous conditions.
Keep in mind before you hike this trail that it is intended for use from February through November, which is when there are more favorable conditions.
Always remember to take extra precautions while you are hiking Mount Yonah, staying away from the edge of the cliffs, and preparing as best as you can when out in the elements.
