There's no need to add red dye, they'll find it even if the water is clear.

Hummingbirds are also drawn to tubular flowers that are conducive to their long beaks, so planting some of those can also be helpful in attracting hummingbirds. It's often said that hummingbirds are creatures of habit and return to the same feeding sources over and over again. You may have been feeding the same hummingbirds for years now and never even knew it!
