This Georgia International Dark Sky Park Is One of the Best Winter Stargazing Spots

You may have explored this famous park in Georgia during the daytime, but there's something really special that happens after the sun sets.

Georgia's state parks have a lot to offer during the day: meandering trails, mountain views, rushing rivers, and spectacular wildlife. But the show doesn't end when the sun sets. In fact, these protected areas are home to some of the most vibrant night skies in the state, and nowhere is that truer than Stephen C. Foster State Park. This International Dark Sky Park is a fantastic place to observe the night sky, thanks to the absence of light pollution.

One of the seven wonders of Georgia, the Okefenokee Swamp is worth experiencing at least once every year if you ask us. And Stephen C. Foster State Park just so happens to be the gateway to this treasure trove of natural beauty. The otherworldly swamp represents the biggest blackwater wetland in the entire South, home to Spanish moss, cypress trees, alligators, turtles, amphibians, and more.

It's a special place that's equally popular among paddlers, hikers, and photographers. For one of the best trails through the park, try the Trembling Earth Nature Trail. Just under a mile, this easy boardwalk trail showcases some of the park's best scenery. Plus, it's located right at the state park check-in area, offering a convenient way to stretch your legs if you've been in the car for a bit.

As the sun begins to set, you'll notice something magical take place. The first pinpricks of light will appear in the sky, followed by thousands more. Suddenly, you'll find yourself under a canopy of bright stars, and you'll feel as though the night sky has never been closer or clearer.

Because the park is located within the National Wildlife Refuge, it enjoys very little light pollution from nearby cities or towns. Better yet, it's protected from future development. The park was designated as an International Dark Sky Park in 2016 and, as described on DarkSky.org, is a "Gold-tier night sky experience."

If you're fascinated by the night sky, there's simply no better place to be in Georgia. And, depending on the availability of staff members, one-hour astronomy programs can be arranged at no cost for groups of 25 or more. Learn more about the program, as well as camping options, when you visit the official Stephen C. Foster State Park website.
