If ever a state park was perfectly named, North Georgia's Cloudland Canyon State Park would be it.

This heavenly 3,000-acre park up near the Tennessee border isn't a secret, but it does boast some of the best views and most stunning natural scenery in the state – but without the full-sized crowds that some of the lower parks and peaks see.

Panoramic views that look straight out of a painting are everywhere you turn and at the top of every trail.

Whether it’s your first time here or millionth, the Overlook Trail is a gorgeous adventure that should not be – dare we say – overlooked!

All puns aside, no trip to Cloudland is complete without hiking the Overlook Trail. This easy path meanders along the rim of the canyon through dense wooded areas that are full of photo ops. But be sure to hike down to the Main Overlook, which might just take your breath away.

A camera is a must-have for any visit to the park!

Feeling up to a hike that takes you into the park and not just the outskirts? Cloudland has plenty to choose from.

Check out Sitton's Gulch for a challenging trek to the mouth of the canyon that's filled with lush nature, mini waterfalls, and vibrant wildflowers in the spring.

Or for a more leisurely trail, the one-mile Meadowlands Trail wraps travelers around a quaint meadow and farm site, and features a unique environment that's ripe with flora and fauna…and even a sweet fishing pond! For skilled hikers who are craving an extra challenge in the more rugged areas of the park, there are multiple permit-required backcountry trails tucked away that offer some top-secret views of their own.

And speaking of waterfalls...

Breathtaking vistas aren't all that Cloudland has to offer. Majestic cascades are literally everywhere here!

The stunning two-mile Waterfall Trail is treasured by Georgians for its up-close-and-personal views of Cherokee Falls and Hemlock Falls.

Although you might just find a few other cascades hiding out in the nooks and crannies of the park if you keep your eyes peeled!

A word of caution: the Waterfall Trail is not accessible to everyone. A steep, winding staircase descends over 350 feet into the canyon via 600 steps. And though hand railings provide some stability, the hike back up is an arduous and challenging one.

Please note that the Waterfall Trail is also not dog-friendly due to the strenuous and dangerous nature of the climb. If you're traveling with your four-legged companion, there are plenty of other trails to explore at the park!  You'll want to come back at another time without your pet. so that you can enjoy the waterfall journey safely and worry-free.

Of course, not everyone is an avid backpacker. Fortunately, Cloudland Canyon also has plenty of camping opportunities, a frisbee golf park, and even mountain bike and horse trails that offer a unique perspective of this glorious mountain.
