This Is the Most Peaceful Part of Black Rock Mountain State Park
This quiet mountain lake trail offers tons of spectacular scenery in less than a mile.
Georgia's highest-elevation state park boasts stunning mountain views, forested trails, and endless natural wonders. Black Rock Mountain State Park isn't exactly a hidden gem, but if you know where to look, there are plenty of more secluded, quieter places to enjoy. One trail that I'm particularly fond of is the Black Rock Lake Trail. While it may not be the most famous trail in the park, it offers an immersive mountain adventure that's refreshingly easy. It's perfect for an add-on hike, but in my opinion, it's special enough to warrant its own trip to the park.
Whenever I visit a popular state park, I like to do a little research to pinpoint not only the most beautiful trails in the area but also the ones that aren't likely to be overcrowded. That can be a bit difficult to do in a park as well-loved as Black Rock Mountain State Park; however, it's not impossible. When I get the chance to visit, I'm excited to check out the Black Rock Lake Trail. The trail measures just 0.6 miles, with a total elevation gain of just 32 feet. It's astoundingly beautiful and, compared to the park's other trails, such as the Tennessee Rock Trail and the James E. Edmonds Trail, decidedly less crowded.
What I find most alluring about this trail is that it spans lush woods and alpine zones in just a short distance. Plus, it circles around a stunning mountain lake and is teeming with wildlife, especially during the warmer months. Keep your eyes peeled for turtles, ducks, and snakes. Time your visit just right and you'll even notice the blooming mountain laurel!
Most hikers categorize this trail as the perfect addition to other hikes in the park, and, given that it's not too strenuous, it really is feasible to add this as a second hike for the day. However, visitors should note that the parking lot for this trail is quite small, only accommodating half a dozen cars. Your best bet is to arrive early and preferably, on a weekday.
Describing this trail, hikers consistently use the term "peaceful," and it's easy to see why. The reflection of the mountains in the distance, the quiet of the forest, the colorful wildflowers—it all adds to an incredibly serene experience. One recent hiker shares what it was like to stumble upon this trail unexpectedly: "I was going to stop and just look at it, but it was such a nice little trail, I went ahead and did it. Very worthwhile. Water was quite stunning."
