Why Winter Is This Coastal Florida State Park’s Secret Season
Searching for a winter destination in Florida? If so, plan a trip to Topsail Hill Preserve State Park, where you can hike or bike along the gorgeous Emerald Coast. It's fun for everyone!
Here in Florida, we tend to do things differently, and our weather is just as erratic as we are. And to be honest, we like it that way. Our weather caters to all our preferences. If we want to escape the cold, we could head to the south. But if we prefer to embrace the chill, then the Panhandle will be our stomping ground. If you’re like me and would rather brave the cold weather, then this winter destination in Florida is for you.
Topsail Hill Preserve State Park in Santa Rosa Beach is a secret winter escape that you’re going to love. Bring your flip-flops and your walking shoes (you might need them both) for this outdoor winter adventure in Florida.
Just 10 miles east of Destin, off Highway 98, is one of Florida’s hidden gems. Boasting pretty emerald beaches, otherworldly sand dunes, hiking trails, wetlands, and more, Topsail Hill Preserve State Park is a nature lover’s dream come true. This Emerald Coast beauty is great for year-round adventure (they're open until sundown 365 days a year!), but you’ll want to plan your visit in winter.
But why exactly is winter a better time to explore this state park? Well, I’m glad you asked! Not only is the park less crowded, but the weather will be cooler, which I prefer when I hike. There are over 10 miles of multi-use trails here, where you can stroll, hike, or ride your bike. The network of trails includes paved and sandy surfaces, and there are even boardwalk trails that take you across the wetlands. Moreover, the park is known for its accessible amenities, which include a free tram and the use of a free all-terrain wheelchair. So, no matter what your abilities are, you can find great hiking opportunities here.
As you trek, keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife and migratory birds that are here to enjoy the mild winter weather, too. If you get lucky, you might see a gator (or two) hanging out in the wetlands. One of the most scenic trails in the park is the Campbell Lake, Morris Lake, and Old Growth Trail. You’ll cross wetlands, meander through old-growth pine forests, and stroll by scenic lakes. This 7-mile trek is an adventure featuring several enchanting Florida landscapes, and you’ll want to take some time to enjoy them all. And chances are, you’ll have them to yourself on a pretty winter day!
Since it rarely snows in Florida, don’t expect to see that here. However, what you can look forward to is the jaw-dropping sand dunes that almost resemble powdery snow. If you ask me, these natural wonders are one of the main highlights of the park. In fact, the park was named after these otherworldly dunes that stretch as far as the eye can see, and they tower over the stunning emerald beach.
And speaking of the beach, I’ve walked along the shores of the Emerald Coast in the middle of winter before, and trust me, it’s a truly magical experience. Just imagine having miles of pristine sandy beaches all to yourself; it will absolutely leave you speechless. While you can’t build a snowman here, perhaps you’ll let your imagination go wild and build a sandcastle instead. Or just sit quietly, marveling at the gorgeous emerald waters of the Florida Gulf Coast. If the day is on the chilly side, you might need to bring a sweater or a light jacket along with you.
If you want to extend your time inside the park (which I highly recommend), plan ahead and pack your camping gear or rent one of the glamping bungalows. Please note, there is a small entrance fee that is charged per vehicle to access the park. Wake up the next day and enjoy activities like fishing, kayaking, or Geocaching — all of which are tons of fun during the winter. This park is great for kids and dogs, so bring them along to this winter destination in Florida.
