Enjoy Florida’s Perfect Winter Temps on This Scenic Swamp Hike
Explore the enchanting Hickory and Cypress Swamp Trail at Highlands Hammock State Park. You'll find towering cypress trees, lush hammocks, and scenic boardwalks!
Winter hiking in Florida looks a lot different when compared to the rest of the country. For other states, hiking during the winter means snow-capped mountains and a dusting of flakes still hanging from nearby branches. In Florida, winter hiking often still allows for shorts! And yet, cooler winter temps create a much more enjoyable hiking experience, especially in parts of central Florida.
Today, we're taking you up to Highlands Hammock State Park in Sebring, Florida, to enjoy the Hickory and Cypress Swamp Trail. At just under three miles, this easy route will take hikers through a beautiful, shady old-growth forest, with tons of nature at every turn.
The Hickory Trail is part of a network of interconnected paths on the park's east side, including the Wild Orange Grove and Big Oak trails. This trail guides hikers through ancient oak hammocks and floodplain forests, making it a worthwhile trek to see some of Florida's best flora. A highlight of the Hickory Trail is its historic catwalk-style boardwalk, providing an adventurous experience as it traverses the swamp. Visitors should exercise caution, especially when the boardwalk is wet. Make sure you wear the proper footwear for these narrow walkways.
Highlands Hammock State Park encompasses over 9,000 acres of varied habitats, including hydric hammock, cypress swamp, hardwood swamp, and pine flatwoods. When you hear the word "hammock" used here, it isn't what you think. The term "hammock" in Florida's nature refers to a "shady place," highlighting the park's dense canopy and rich biodiversity.
So much of Florida's nature, especially the trees, has been around for centuries. You'll find towering beauties in this park that look almost prehistoric!
So why should you hike the Hickory and Cypress Swamp Trail during wintertime? The average temperatures hover in the 60s and low 70s, and the sun is still shining, providing that added bit of necessary warmth. Just don't forget the water and sunscreen!
