Uncover the Mysterious Underground World Hiding in Florida’s State Park
Millions of years of underground history awaits at Florida Caverns State Park. Go for a hike and then a guided cavern tour for a bucket-list-worthy adventure!
Florida is a state with so much aboveground beauty—sparkling oceans, mangrove-lined wetlands, inland lakes, dense forests—that there’s hardly time to think about its subterranean world. Of course, you’d be missing out on something pretty special if you never ventured below ground, to the fascinating underground attractions in Florida. Fortunately, Florida Caverns State Park offers cave hiking at its finest.

Situated in the Panhandle, Florida Caverns State Park doesn’t quite qualify as a hidden gem. In fact, it was among the first state parks established by Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal Program, and it’s not hard to see why. The caverns and surrounding landscape have a beauty that borders on surreal: deep limestone caves, dramatic rock outcroppings, blue springs, and sinkholes.

It’s believed that the caves formed approximately 38 million years ago, when most of the Southeast’s coastal plain was under the sea. Shells, coral, and other sediments gathered on the seafloor and eventually, when the water receded, these materials hardened into limestone. Through a great dissolving process over the past million years, crevices have been formed big enough to walk through, which is how this cavern system came to be.

The springs, caves, and bluffs within the park are unique and are often called karst terrain. This unusual habitat is home to some truly rare species, including blind cave crayfish, cave-roosting bats, and cave salamanders.
Not all of the park is below ground; in fact, there are some lovely trails that will take you through the bluffs and rocky terrain. One of the most popular of these trails is the Beech Magnolia and Bluff Loop Trail. It's an approachable, family-friendly trail that measures just 1.1 miles and offers beautiful views of the water. (A quick note: if you visit during the summer, be sure to wear bug spray!)

Of course, no visit is complete without a tour. In fact, this is the only location in all of Florida where visitors can experience a guided cavern tour. The tours take about one hour and will take you deep into the heart of this beautiful underground world. You’ll start by descending 33 steps into the cavern entrance. From there, you’ll be taken through a series of room-like spaces, some the size of a cathedral and others no wider than a narrow passage. In total, you’ll have covered just about three-quarters of a mile, but you’ll feel like you’ve experienced a whole new world.
