If You Live in Florida, Exploring This Key West Botanical Garden Is Hands-Down the Best Way to Enjoy Spring
Fluttering butterflies, blooming flowers, and tropical birds make this special Key West garden a springtime must.
When I think of spring, a few things come to mind: namely, blooming flowers, singing birds, and colorful butterflies. Florida enjoys these things almost year-round, but one special place embraces this ephemeral season wholeheartedly: Key West Tropical Forest and Botanical Gardens. This time of year, the garden is a celebration of blossoming flowers, migrating birds, and nearly 40 species of fluttering butterflies. By all accounts, this off-the-beaten-path destination is well worth the journey to get there.
Florida has an impressive number of botanical gardens, and each is worth visiting. This time of year, though, we're partial to a special place known as the Key West Tropical Forest and Botanical Gardens. Established in 1936, this park boasts 15 acres on the lovely Stock Island. It holds the rare distinction of being the only frost-free botanical garden in the continental U.S. It originally opened as part of a Depression-Era recovery efforts by the federal government. Since then, the Key West Botanical Garden Society, Inc. has remained true to its efforts to preserve this beautiful yet sensitive tropical ecosystem.
This garden is a wonderful advocate for native plants and species. It also serves as an essential stopping-over point for neo-tropical birds traveling from places as far as South America. Upon arrival, you'll be greeted by a kind volunteer and encouraged to watch a short introductory film to familiarize yourself with the landscape. From there, you'll embark on a self-guided tour, choosing from various gardens, including two wetland habitats and two dedicated butterfly gardens.
Exploring the property, you'll enjoy the well-marked paths and variety of flora and fauna. Springtime is a special season, as things are very much in bloom but a bit quieter in terms of tourism. If you can visit on a weekday, you'll enjoy being immersed in this secluded space. One recent traveler described the place as a "Monet painting come alive." If that doesn't sound like a slice of springtime paradise, I'm not sure what does!
Pro tip: The garden features a beautiful pavilion perfect for enjoying lunch, so feel free to bring a packed picnic with you.
