The Can’t-Miss Delaware Hike for Every Nature Lover’s Bucket List

Stroll along a boardwalk, through the woods, and past a pond on this pretty nature hike in Seaford, a fun trail for the whole family, including the pups.

A deep breath of fresh air does the soul a whole lot of good but combined with a quiet stroll? Instant relaxation. While a brisk walk around the neighborhood is always an easy way to get outside, sometimes we want a little bit more, to escape the noise of traffic and everyday sounds. This nature hike in Delaware is perfect when we don’t have an entire day but want to spend some time outdoors surrounded by some of the area’s most breathtaking natural beauty.

If you’re strapped for time, all you'll need is about an hour to follow the Chapel Branch Nature Loop, a 2.9-mile trail showcasing the beauty of Chapel Branch Nature Area in Seaford. Despite its easy rating, the trail tends to be quiet, an idyllic setting if you want to spend some time alone or with your pup. (All dogs must be on a leash.)

A hidden gem in Delaware, the pretty path is easy to find. Park in the gravel lot at Chapel Branch Nature Area and look for the nearby trailhead. Chapel Branch Nature Loop is a combination of three different trails and, if you’re up for even more exploring and have the time, you’ll stumble upon several side paths where you can continue your adventure. While the trail is fairly well marked, you might want to download a map from AllTrails to help you stay the course as there are a few confusing spots along the way.

Soak up the tranquility as you trek along the trail, cross over footbridges, up wooden stairs, and along a bridge, where you can sit on a bench and reflect on the beauty, including a stream, around you. Shed your stress as you meander on this wooded path while nature’s symphony serenades you. Local wildlife, including deer and frogs, is abundant in the nature area, and you might even spot blueberry bushes in season.

Consider the time of year you’re visiting to determine what you’ll need to pack. The warmer months usually mean dealing with a lot of bugs and mosquitoes, so bring bug spray and check for ticks after your hike. Trees provide plenty of shade, promising respite during the hot summer months. Autumn transforms the landscape into a colorful masterpiece, but the fallen leaves can get slippery, especially after it rains, and you’ll feel as though you’ve wandered into a winter wonderland after a fresh snowfall.

Even with its easy rating, the trail has some tricky terrain, predominantly hidden tree roots, so take care as you explore. Don’t worry too much about overexerting yourself, as the elevation gain is only 72 feet. Most consider this a laid-back adventure suitable for walkers, hikers, and runners of all ages and skill levels.
