When it comes to state parks, you may think bigger is better. We won't deny it - massive spots like the 26,477-acre Pachaug State Forest are pretty amazing. There's so much to explore, and with all that space, you can feel miles away from everyone. But there are plenty of small Connecticut state parks that are also worthy of exploration. Ever find yourself wondering what the smallest state park in Connecticut is? Minnie Island State Park lies in New London County's Gardner Lake and it measures just .88 acres in area - barely bigger than the average backyard! This remote park is only reachable by boat. Check it out:
Gardner Lake spans 529 acres in Montville and Salem. Within the lake, you'll find the tiny Minnie Island, which was designated as a Connecticut State Park in 1925.
The island was inhabited by squatters in the early 20th-century, and both Montville and Salem claimed the land as their own. The state ended up taking ownership of the island, rather than choose a side.
The island can only be reached by boat, but it's a simple 1/3-mile paddle from the Gardner Lake State Park boat launch.
Minnie Island has three entrance points, with the easiest area to enter being the south beach.
You will have to step into the water to get on land, and your boat will need to be tied up to one of the many trees here.
Since this is an undeveloped state park, there are no amenities here, and it almost feels like a primeval forest.
Trees cover almost the entire island, with a small clearing in the middle that has a fire pit.
Minnie Island State Park may lack the trails and amenities that larger parks feature, but you have to admit: it's a pretty cool place for a picnic or to watch the sunset.
