Don’t Try This One Hike in Connecticut If You’re Afraid of Heights

This six-mile loop trail gets pretty steep as you climb your way up the tallest mountain in Connecticut.

Some of the best hikes in Connecticut are the ones that push you to your limits. The ones that are well outside of your comfort zone, taking you to new heights and leaving you with new skill sets and breathtaking views. One of the most extreme hikes in Connecticut is found in Mount Riga State Park, and it offers a chance to stand at the summit of the tallest mountain in Connecticut.

You’ll find Mount Riga State Park in Salisbury, up in the northwest corner of Connecticut. The 276-acre park boasts lush greenery during the summertime and magical snow-covered landscapes in the winter. From fishing to cross-country skiing, this park is a year-round playground for outdoor adventures.

The state park is also home to the tallest mountain in the state, Bear Mountain. The Bear Mountain Trail is one of the most extreme hikes in Connecticut, but you’ll be rewarded with a spectacular summit view.

The six-mile loop trail has an elevation gain of 1,689 feet. It starts off relatively easy as you make your way through the forest. There are other hiking trails in the area, including the Undermountain Trail and parts of the Appalachian Trail. Overall, this trail is well-marked; just pay attention and make sure you’re following the Bear Mountain Trail as you ascend up the mountain.

The trek to the top comes with several steep sections that will have you scrambling at times. I’m a big believer that the right gear makes all the difference, and trekking poles will come in handy on this trail. Since you’re gaining a lot of elevation, you may encounter snow and icy sections, so bringing a pair of micro spikes wouldn’t hurt either. Just toss them in your backpack in case you need them. They take up no space in your bag and are one of those items that, when you need them, you really need them. A good pair of hiking boots with decent tread will also help out on the trail.

Once you reach the top, you’ll be standing at the highest natural point in the state! A whopping 2,354 feet above sea level. Enjoy those spectacular views across multiple states.

This hike offers beauty throughout the seasons. Of course, the summer months are full of beautiful greenery, the wildflowers offer a pop of color in the spring, and we all know Connecticut’s fall foliage is a mesmerizing show. Even winter brings a different type of beauty that’s worth braving the cold for. Add this extreme hike to your list for every season and watch Mother Nature change throughout the year.

While you’re in this neck of the woods, spend some time exploring Salisbury! It’s one of our favorite small towns in the state. It's also home to the oldest public library in the United States.
