The Everglades is truly one of the country's most amazing natural wonders. This massive wetland region in Florida spans thousands of acres and attracts over a million people to Florida's southern tip each year. This slow-moving river serves as an irreplaceable habitat for countless species of plants, reptiles, and birds. While the Everglades is unique for its size, it's not the only wetland this side of the Mississippi. You might be surprised to learn we actually have a miniature Everglades swamp in Connecticut! Within the massive Pachaug State Forest lies the Pachaug-Great Meadow Swamp, a huge Atlantic white cedar swamp that's quite beautiful in its own right. Check it out:
Pachaug State Forest is absolutely massive. The forest spans nearly 26,500 acres and spreads throughout six towns. It's home to miles of hiking trails, immense history, and tons of natural beauty.
Within this region, you'll also find the gorgeous Pachaug-Great Meadow Swamp. The swamp was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1973 and is one of the largest Atlantic white cedar swamps in the country.
The woods here are in danger of being overtaken by hemlock.
If you're wondering what the difference is between a swamp and a marsh, swamps typically have deeper water and remain wet for longer portions of the year.
All kinds of animals live in Connecticut's swamps, including beavers, turtles, various birds, and insects.
This is truly one of the most magnificent forests in the state, and thanks to its huge size, even many who have visited aren't aware that it's home to one of the largest swamps in Connecticut!
