Not every outdoor adventure in Connecticut requires a full day or even an entire afternoon. There are plenty of quick outings that still lead to extraordinary places of beauty. One of our favorites is the hike under one mile that leads straight to Buttermilk Falls.
The blue-blazed Mattatuck Trail winds for 38 miles from Litchfield to Wolcott. Luckily to see the stunning Buttermilk Falls, you don't have to hike the entire trail, just a short 0.6-mile section.
Park in the small pull-off on Lane Hill Road in Plymouth to find the trailhead. The short trail leads across a simple footbridge into a quiet hemlock forest.
As you pass under the raised canopy and along the water's edge, take in the sights and sounds of this peaceful setting.
The trail is well-marked with blue blazes and easy to follow. With only a slight elevation gain of 114 feet, this hike is great for all ages, even young kids.
It will only take 10-15 minutes to reach the falls. Once you arrive, you'll be thrilled that you made some time to discover this hidden jewel.
Buttermilk Falls has three different levels that spill water in picturesque cascades and horsetails.
Shallow pools collect the water at the base of the falls. Wide and flat nearby trail sections offer possibilities for picnicking or simply gazing in awe at this natural wonder.
The hemlock grove, lush ferns, and small wildflowers add to the fairytale setting of the falls. We can't think of a sweeter hike to take in just 30 minutes.
Address: Lane Hill Road, Plymouth, CT, 06786.
