This Slot Canyon Hike Is One of Colorado’s Most Scenic Trails
The Redemption Trail is a slot canyon hike in Colorado that leads through an incredibly unique landscape.
Hiking in Colorado is a nature lover's dream. Our beautiful state has mountains, forests, canyons, and all the elevation change you could ever want. But you probably don't feel like climbing Pike's Peak every day, so it's nice to find easier trails that still offer amazing views.
One of my favorites is the Redemption Trail just outside of Cañon City. It's only three miles long with an elevation gain of less than 500 feet, so it's a fun little adventure to embark on in between challenging hikes. This slot canyon hike in Colorado takes you through some of the most unique terrain in the state, and it's bound to become one of your new go-to trails.
The trail begins at the Temple Canyon Trailhead, which has a small parking lot. It's open year-round and, though a popular destination, the crowds are rarely so bad that you won't have time to yourself. The scenery is stunning along the way, with sweeping valley views that seem to go on forever. Seeing the hillsides covered in lush greenery is jaw-dropping, and you may even spot wildlife like deer if the weather is nice.
If you happen to visit in the spring, you'll be treated to the lovely sight of colorful wildflowers dotting the landscape (but the trail is just as beautiful in every other season, so don't fret if you can't make it in spring).
Speaking of the weather, the Redemption Trail has little to no shade, so bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat if it's a hot day. Luckily, the hike is short enough to finish while it's still cool out, especially if you start around sunrise.
The terrain changes from hilly to rocky quite early on in the hike, and the main attraction is within the first mile. Walking through the slot canyon is such an extraordinary experience. Unlike many slot canyons, this one is suitable for all ages and skill levels because it doesn't involve technical maneuvering. Kids love the trail because it makes them feel like explorers discovering a new place.
If a three-mile hike isn't quite enough for you, the trail connects to several others for an extended adventure. The entire trail system is very well marked, so you can find your way easily.
