When you need to reconnect with nature and enjoy some fresh air, there are many options in the Cincinnati area. As the largest park in the Great Parks of Hamilton County system, Miami Whitewater Forest should top your list as a natural escape from everyday life. And best of all, its 7.8 mile Shaker Trace Trail is filled with stunning wildflowers during the warmer months.
Miami Whitewater Forest, just west of Cincinnati, is one of many wonderful parks scattered throughout our city.
This large oasis has a little something for everyone. But during the summer, the most beautiful spot has to be along the Shaker Trace Trail, where you'll find endless fields of wildflowers.
The trail technically starts near the lake and harbor, making it easy to access.
The 7.8 miles are fully paved, which make it perfect for walking, running, and bicycling. It's rated moderate mainly for the length and the few inclines along the path.
The trail has more than wildflowers to keep you entertained.
There are various bridges and tunnels, as well as picturesque places to pull over and take in the scenery. It's a nice combination of shade and full sun, making it ideal for various types of weather.
The trail begins (depending on which direction you go) in the woods and eventually opens up to vast cornfields and then a lovely landscape of wildflowers.
The trail is well-maintained and the area is preserved just for these flowers.
In the summer, you'll pass a variety of blossoms. Even on a perfect summer weekend day, the trail does not feel crowded during a stroll through the open space.
These pictures don't quite provide a full sense of the expanse of the fields.
Especially if you're visiting from the city or suburbs, you'll love the open space and fresh air. It's incredibly quiet, even with the crossing of a few streets and a delightful escape close to downtown.
The park has many other notable features.
The 85-acre lake provides a plethora of water fun and the harbor has everything you need to get out and enjoy it. From boat and bike rentals to fishing supplies, they have you covered.
Miami Whitewater's Shaker Trace Trail is a one-of-a-kind gem in Cincinnati.
This popular trail will leave you refreshed and reconnected with nature. The wildflowers are beautiful, but don't hesitate to visit this area any time of the year.
