I Explored the Colorful Flower Fields of Carlsbad, California, for a Picture-Perfect Spring Experience

One place that had taken a top spot on my bucket list for many years was The Flower Fields in Carlsbad, California, and I finally checked it off.

Like most of you, I have a bucket list—and it's pretty long! One place that had taken a top spot for many years was The Flower Fields in Carlsbad, California. I'm almost certain I first discovered these colorful fields on Instagram, but I never had the chance to go until this year. Timing travel with a seasonal attraction while balancing a busy home life was tricky for several years, but spring 2025 was when I could make it happen.

My boyfriend and I chose a weekend in late March for a romantic getaway to San Diego, and, by chance, it coincided with The Flower Farm's season. I was so excited to finally see this Instagram-worthy location in person!

As we pulled into the parking lot of The Flower Fields, our jaws dropped as the massive flower fields came into view. Set on a hill, it was like looking at a rainbow with individual colors blended together. Our first taste of the scenery was quite magical, and we couldn't wait to get out of the car to explore.

Upon showing our tickets, the woman who checked us in enthusiastically told us that "millions of ranunculus are in bloom now." She then handed us a brochure with a map and a list of attractions—there's quite a bit more to see here than the fields. We were in awe the moment we entered into the colorful world of this spring attraction.

Before we walked to the fields, we checked out a few of the other attractions like the Historical Poinsettia Display inside a 1,500-square-foot greenhouse, the Glass in Flight sculptural exhibit by artist Alex Heveri, and Don Miller's Garden, where flowers are transformed into art. The farm also offers a tractor wagon ride for an added fee, and while we debated on exploring the fields this way, we opted to get some exercise and walk. However, I believe taking the open-air tractor to The Flower Fields is perfect for families with small children and those who cannot take a long walk.

Eventually, we made our way to the fields of Tecolote Giant Ranunculus, which are a member of the buttercup family. To give you an idea, there are over 50 acres of these flowers growing here, and each acre has more than 200,000 plants. Now let's do some math: if each plant produces 10 blooms, how many flowers per acre? You are correct if you said two million! And, apparently, during the peak of the season, there may be up to 80 million flowers. That's right... 80 million! Just imagine how impressive the fields look during the full bloom. No wonder the Flower Fields are so popular.

The ranunculus is planted in such a way that there are large bands of colors. From red to yellow to pink to purple, it's a kaleidoscope of colors that looks like a rainbow when viewed from afar. There are some sections, though, where there's a dominant color band but a few other colors are mixed in. All in all, it's visually stunning.

Of course, this is a picture-perfect place that makes visitors super excited to take photos for social media. Believe me, we took many Insta-worthy shots ourselves. The farm even placed several photo props like old tractors and oversized Adirondack chairs throughout the fields. No matter if you come here for a photoshoot or for your love of flowers, The Flower Fields is one of the most colorful places you can visit in Southern California.
