This Southern California Botanical Garden Makes For The Perfect Relaxing Day Trip
Discover gorgeous flowers, awesome hiking trails, and stunning ocean views at this unique botanical garden in Ventura, CA.
I find that strolling through a garden or nursery filled with lush, verdant plants and colorful blooms is the perfect way to relax and recharge. While our state’s many gardens and nurseries give us a chance to see vibrant trees, plants, and flowers, this particular botanical garden in Ventura, California, has something others don’t — magnificent ocean views! Visiting the Ventura Botanical Gardens is like walking through a fairytale, and you’re going to love it. It's one of the most stunning gardens in Southern California.
Exploring the vast 107-acre Ventura Botanical Gardens begins (or ends) at the Merewether Welcome Center, where you will find a cool little gift shop filled with art, gifts, pottery, and plants for sale. As you leave the Welcome Center, you will follow the flowery path past olive trees and through the nursery. You may even have the opportunity to see plants, ones that will eventually be added to the gardens, being propagated here.
The Ventura Botanical Gardens is a collection of gardens representing the various Mediterranean climate zones (five in total) found worldwide. The gardens here are constantly changing and expanding, so there are always new things to see. I suggest you come here multiple times throughout the year to see what has changed.
The gardens, which feature several tree and flower species that are threatened and endangered, provide opportunities for scientific research, education, and conservation. Go for a hike through the botanical gardens to see the trees and flowers on a relatively easy trail that includes gentle switchbacks up the hill and a loop at the top.
There are some 100,000 plants growing on a slope that rises up behind City Hall in downtown Ventura. You will pass through gardens representing Chile, South Africa, Australia, the Mediterranean, and, of course, California. Among the plants and trees you can see are the Chilean Soapbark Tree, barrel cactus, California oak, California bush poppy, lupine, Chilean Wine Palms, and so much more.
Among the things that set this place apart from other botanical gardens are the panoramic views of the Pacific coastline, the Channel Islands, Topa Topa peak in Ojai, and the city of Ventura below. There are new and stunning views with every bend in the trail. As you explore, you will find educational displays, rocks, and plaques with quotes about nature, along with benches to sit and enjoy the views.
