Plan a Valentine’s Day Hike on Southern California’s 5 Most Romantic Trails
Looking to whisk your special someone into the great outdoors? Check out these breathtaking hikes in Southern California that are sure to set the right mood!
If you're a Southern Californian, you'll be excited to hear that the trails are just another place in our great state to spark up some romance. Southern California is home to immense beauty, and there are countless hikes just waiting for you and someone special to explore together. So, are you willing to trade your date-night outfits for hiking boots this February? Here are a few of our favorite romantic trails that you and your partner should consider trying this Valentine's Day!
1. Torrey Pines Beach Trail, Del Mar
Let's face it: not every couple is ready for the revelation of seeing one another sweating bullets on a switchback. If you're still preserving a sense of mystery, I recommend heading to Torrey Pines Beach Trail Loop. Check the tides before you go — part of what makes this hike magical is that it spills right onto the beach. At only two miles, it's ideal for strolling hand-in-hand.
2. Condor Gulch Trail, Soledad
Ready to live out your Western fantasy? Pinnacles National Park offers the perfect setting to cowboy up with your special someone. If you're game for a challenge — and open to sweating off the glamor of city life — the Condor Gulch Trail captures the essence of this rugged yet breathtaking landscape. Climb over 1,600 feet in elevation over a five-and-a-half-mile route featuring thirsty canyons, sun-bleached rocks, and dazzling oases of water. Just be prepared to bundle up for this desert adventure. Current temperatures can range from the high 40s to the low 60s.
3. Smugglers Road, Channel Islands National Park
A trip to Channel Islands National Park promises more than a hike — it's a journey. To get there, you'll hop on a park concessionaire boat before spending at least an hour gliding across the glittering Pacific. Trust me when I say that the travel time only enhances the romance of this stunning archipelago. Located on Santa Cruz Island, this trail to Smugglers Road, Scorpion Canyon, and Potato Harbor leads adventurers to one mesmerizing view after another. For the best experience, I recommend staying overnight at the Scorpion Canyon Campground. For ultimate romance, I recommend stargazing beneath the pristine sky.
4. Heart Rock and Arch Rock, Twentynine Palms
Sometimes, we don't need to conjure romance from a landscape — it just spells it out for us. Or, in the case of Joshua Tree's Heart Rock Trail, it carves it in stone. Clocking in at under three miles and accessible year-round, this easy-going trek offers couples a low-key yet breathtaking experience with plenty of opportunities for unforgettable photos.
5. Reef Point and Crystal Cove Trail, Laguna Beach
One thing to love about Southern California is that you can easily discover gorgeous adventures without straying too far from the city's hustle and bustle. Tucked along the Pacific, a little over an hour from Los Angeles, Crystal Cove State Park is the ideal destination for sun-kissed fun. Reach the water via Crystal Cove Trail and beach-comb up the shore. For best results, bring a picnic and linger until sunset. The murmur of waves meeting the sand is just as romantic as a string quartet.
