See Thousands Of Monarch Butterflies At This Northern California Grove
Did you know that it's monarch butterfly season? Monarch butterflies abound from October through February, and there's no better place to spot thousands of them than at Monarch Butterfly Grove in Northern California. You can find it at the southernmost tip of the city of Pismo Beach, right along Highway 1.
Every year, thousands of Monarch Butterflies fly to Pismo Beach, seeking shelter from freezing cold winters up north.
See all the butterflies in a dense cluster up there? They stay together for warmth.
The colony here is one of the largest in the U.S., hosting approximately 25,000 butterflies over the last five years.
The butterflies here at Pismo Beach have a uniquely long life span of six months, whereas most Monarchs only live for six weeks.
Youngsters will love seeing so many beautiful butterflies in one spot.
Look closely, and what you thought were old leaves could actually be clusters of Monarch Butterflies hanging from the trees.
Bring a camera with a good zoom lens to help you see the butterflies even more clearly and capture the beauty of the occasion.
Bring your furry pup along, too, and he might even make some new friends.
Scientists aren't sure why the Monarch Butterflies continue returning the same sites every winter, but one thing is certain: Northern Californians welcome them with open arms.
