The Hidden Nature Park In Southern California With Its Very Own Lake, Duck Pond, And So Much More
I remember spending a lot of time at different parks when I was growing up - from riding ponies at the incredible Griffith Park to family picnics at little neighborhood spots. Nature is good for everyone. And a great park is both a free attraction for families to play and explore and a place for busy adults to slow down and take a breath of fresh air. If that is exactly what you need right now, you are going to love the lesser-known Franklin Canyon Park in Los Angeles. It has so much to offer and is a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.
This scenic park sits near the geographic center of Los Angeles, nestled in a canyon between Beverly Hills and the suburbs of the San Fernando Valley.
One of the major features of the 605-acre Franklin Canyon Park is a secluded three-acre lake surrounded by lush greenery.
There is also an ADA-accessible duck pond. Actually, both the lake and pond provide a permanent home for many birds and a seasonal home for others passing through on the so-called Pacific flyway.
In addition to ducks, the pond is also populated by geese, fish, bullfrogs, and turtles basking in the sun. It's a delightful spot to bring your camera, your kids, or both!
It is hard to imagine you are smack dab in the middle of the city when you are surrounded by wild nature, including wooded forests, creeks, and grasslands that fill this natural oasis of a park.
Whether you want to take an easy walk along the water's edge or a strenuous hike, the park's five miles of hiking trails offer an adventure waiting for everyone.
If you do happen to be craving a bit of a challenge, set off on the Hastain Trail which leads to an incredible overlook with panoramic views reaching all the way to the ocean on a clear day. Currently the trail is closed due to storm damage, but check back on its AllTrails page for reopening updates.
When you visit Franklin Canyon Park, be sure to bring a picnic. Scattered throughout the park, you will find a variety of pretty settings with tables to enjoy your lunch.
Visit the Sooky Goldman Nature Center to learn about the park's history, culture, flora, and fauna.
