A hike to one of Yosemite National Park's waterfalls sounds like a perfectly wondrous experience, complete with awe-inspiring views and, of course, the sight of a beautiful cascade. However, you may be surprised to know that the Chilnualna Falls Trail is considered one of the scariest haunted hiking trails in the U.S, as named on this list from Travel Channel. The story behind this allegedly haunted trail is believed to stem from a Native American legend. Even if you're not one to believe in ghost stories, the unique legend behind this trail is still worth learning about!
The Chilnualna Falls Trail is a challenging waterfall hike in Yosemite National Park. Leading hikers to three major cascades, the strenuous nature of the hike makes it great for escaping the crowds of the park's more popular trails.
The trail starts off by following the cascading Chilnualna Creek for .5-miles before switchbacking into the forest. Along the way, hikers are treated to spectacular views of the Wawona Area. On the surface, it's an extraordinary hike that's worth every step.
However, there's a darker side to this trail that few know about - according to ancient legend, that is. On the way to the falls' three cascades, the trail passes by Grouse Lake. It's here that they say you can hear the cries of a young boy who drowned in the lake, and anybody who jumps in to save him will surely suffer the same fate.
Another creepy legend awaits at the top of the waterfall where supposedly an evil spirit is known to push those who get too close to the 240-foot-high ledge. Of course, it's never a great idea to get too close to the edge of a waterfall, regardless of the legend!
Whether or not you believe in evil spirits or the ghost of a drowned boy, the utmost caution should be used when exploring this beautiful trail. The stream and waterfall can become downright treacherous when the water is high, and it can easily sweep an unknowing hiker away.
At over 8-miles round trip, this trail is no walk in the park. However, the creepy tales and rugged conditions shouldn't keep you away from exploring it. Those who brave the Chilnualna Falls Trail are in for some outstanding views and a rare bit of serenity in this popular national park.
If you're a fan of ghost stories AND spectacular scenery, definitely consider the trek to Chilnualna Falls. You may or may not experience something strange while exploring this haunted hiking trail, but you'll definitely fall in love with the trail's natural beauty.
