Five Different Planets Will Align In The Southern California Night Sky During An Incredibly Rare Display
Southern California boasts a variety of awe-inspiring natural wonders, from deserts and mountains to waterfalls and unique rock formations.
This month, 45 minutes before dawn on June 24th, LA’s night sky will light up with a very special sight: five planets aligning all at once! You’ll be able to see Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn all lined up. It’s a rare lineup that won’t be seen again until 2040, so make sure you don’t miss it!
You might have seen planet alignments before. There have been multiple alignments over the years, even with up to four planets. Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn made for a gorgeous view.
If you are a big astronomy fan, make sure you set your alarm so you won’t miss this unbelievable event. While you’ve probably been able to see Mars before, it’s an extra exciting moment when you can see so much of our mysterious solar system at once.
Venus is another planet that is occasionally visible from our blue marble, but rare to see as part of a group.
If you enjoy seeing the planets align, you can make a habit of going to Griffith Observatory. It’s a great spot to observe all kinds of space phenomena. It’s a beautiful spot at all times of day, but especially so when the sun goes down.
While it’s closed past 10:00 PM, it is a lovely place to go for future space events that occur in our city.
The night sky in Los Angeles is so lit up with the city lights that it can be hard to see the stars sometimes. You might want to head out of town to a national park or another campground so you’ll have a prime view!
This lineup of Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, combined with the moon, will definitely be a sight to see. It’s absolutely worth getting up at an inconvenient time to see this planetary event.
