If you're looking for an interesting activity or want to cure your curiosity about what lies beneath the ground, this post is for you! While these destinations might require a bit of driving time from downtown Buffalo, the results are totally worth it when you have the chance to experience natural man-made and woman-made wonders surrounding the 716. Get your cameras ready and head to these six caves near Buffalo that are truly like entering another world.
1. Lockport Cave (5 Gooding Street, Lockport)
These are some of the closest caves near Buffalo, and also some of the most impressive! The Lockport Caves are situated along the Erie Canal, created from a man-made water tunnel. Take a trip to the caves and experience the underground boat ride, guided tours, and - if you dare - guided ghost tours!
2. Cave of the Winds (24 Buffalo Avenue, Niagara Falls)
While you don't actually go IN caves for this adventure, you will get an out-of-this-world experience at the Cave of the Winds in Niagara Falls. Get up close and personal with the power of the falls as you walk down into the Niagara Gorge, and be prepared to get wet!
3. Devil's Hole (Niagara Scenic Pkwy, Niagara Falls)
Devil's Hole sounds ominous, but the views from inside this above-ground cave are gorgeous! Lace up your hiking shoes and take a trek down Devil's Hole Trail at Devil's Hole Park. We promise it will be worth it!
4. Howe Caverns (255 Discovery Drive, Howes Cave)*
The next two caves require a bit of travel time, but if you're looking for an interesting road trip, they're the perfect addition to your itinerary! Howe Caverns offers guided tours for all interests and ages at 156 feet below the earths surface! Whether you choose to take the traditional route, lantern tour, flashlight tour, or splurge for a private guide - we're certain you'll enjoy this experience!
5. Secret Caverns (671 Caverns Road, Howes Cave)
Secret Caverns aren't exactly a secret, but they are definitely impressive! Take the drive up to head down to the caves, which feature a waterfall 100-feet underground. Tours through these caves are simply amazing, and will leave you wanting to come back for more - even despite the extended drive time from Buffalo!
6. Ellicottville Salt Cave & Halotherapy Spa (32 W. Washington Street, Ellicottville)
If you're looking for more of a tranquil experience, head to Ellicottville for an indoor cave! This salt cave promotes healing and tranquility using halotherapy methods and is perfect for the less-outdoorsy type.
