Whitton Farms is the quintessential family-run farm, passed down through four generations with the most tender, loving care.
The farm's roots go back to the early 1900s, when Leona Wells Forrester, Keith's great grandmother, was a widow left to raise four children in Whitton, Arkansas.
Leona came to Whitton as a sharecropper in order to provide for her family. For many years, Leona and her sons painstakingly tended the land, laying the foundation for what would become Whitton Farms.
What started as a means to survive, has become the heart and soul of the Forrester family.
And the farm reflects that metamorphosis, too; current owners Keith and Jill have truly transformed this produce farm into a flower fantasyland.
But it didn't happen overnight; Keith and Jill originally took the reins while also juggling their teaching careers. They were busy -- really busy -- and craved a simpler, more grounded lifestyle.
In an incredibly romantic gesture for Jill's birthday in 2003, Keith planted a flower garden in an empty field on the farm grounds.
The flower garden did really, really well, providing more blooms than the Forrester could possibly enjoy on their own. So they decided to share.
They set up shop in a few local farmers markets, immediately selling out week after week, ultimately providing the means for the couple to make the leap to full-time farming.
Now in their 16th year of farming specialty crops, Whitton Farms grows everything from squash and tomatoes, to greens, melons, and, of course, flowers.
The flowers really are the stars at Whitton Farms. You can visit for a tour in the spring, and really revel in the resplendence of this Arkansas flower farm.
In addition to picking up flowers directly from the farm, you can find Whitton Farms at local farmers markets, or have flowers delivered through their Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. They also offer floral workshops and farm dinners.
Keith and Jill are good people -- the kind of folks you just want to be around. Their drive and dedication is admirable, and the love they put into the farm really shows.
And clearly, these flowers receive a lot of love, as Whitton Farms is a wonderland of bold, beautiful blooms.
Because when something is done with love, it shines.
