Arkansas is blessed with endless natural wonders. Many of these incredible marvels are tucked inside our vast landscapes. And while some require extra…EXTRA leg work, the rewards are always worth the journey. That’s especially true for the Belle Star Cave trail near Mansfield. Featuring a cave, a waterfall, a flowing creek, and more, this rugged wilderness area in Arkansas is waiting to be explored. Gather your hiking gear and let’s trek this incredible terrain with its multiple natural wonders.

If the name Belle Star sounds familiar, that's because she was a notorious female outlaw (the Bandit Queen) who ran with the like of Jesse James. And legend has it that she hid inside this cave in Poteau Mountain, hence the name Belle Star Cave Trail.

Tucked inside the Ouachita National Forest in the Poteau Mountain Wilderness area, this 4-mile trail is not for beginners or novice hikers. It's a rugged and rocky trail with an elevation gain of 1,000 feet, so the kids will also need to sit this one out.

For the most ideal experience, an OHV is recommended. However, expert hikers will enjoy this challenging but thrilling trek, as there are many different terrains to explore.

As you trek, you'll come across Rocky Creek that's dotted with rocks of all shapes and sizes...hence the name. If you're on an ATV you can easily cross without getting wet.

Once you cross the creek, you'll continue on the trail until you get to the waterfall and cave. After a good rain, the 50-foot fall will be steadily flowing over the rocky ledge.

Of course, you'll want to capture some pictures for your collection as you stand behind the fall. While the waterfall is impressive, the cave is the crown jewel of this hike.

The hidden cave is tucked behind the waterfall. And with its stacked rocks and make-shift chimney, you can tell it was used as a hiding spot. Perhaps by the infamous Belle Star but nobody knows for sure.

If you're feeling adventurous, crawl inside the cave for a better view. It's large enough to stand in as well as to pitch a tent.

Between the rugged terrain, flowing creek, hidden cave, and waterfall, this thrilling hike in the wilderness area in Arkansas is one you won't forget.

And you'll agree with us that the rewards are worth every step of this challenging hike.
