The Little-Known Nature Center In Arkansas Where, If You’re Patient Enough, You Can Hold Butterflies

Arkansas' nature centers, especially the Fred Berry Crooked Creek Nature Center, offer diverse outdoor activities and are havens for butterfly enthusiasts.

Arkansas’ nature centers are great ecosystems to learn about wildlife and explore the natural surroundings. Moreover, they are havens for all nature lovers as well as outdoor enthusiasts. Featuring wildlife hiking trails, fishing, hunting, and more, there are endless adventures waiting. Aside from the outdoor experiences, nature centers are sanctuaries for butterflies as well as other pollinators. And if you’re patient enough, you could even connect with some of these graceful beauties. That’s especially true about the AGFC Fred Berry Crooked Creek Nature Center in Yellville. It’s a little-known ecosystem and in my opinion, the best nature center in Arkansas to witness fluttering pollinators. And if you love butterflies like I do, you’ll want to visit this butterfly wonderland for yourself.

Tucked along Crooked Creek inside the Ozarks, you'll find the 421-acre Fred Berry Conservation Center.

Formerly a dairy farm, this little-known habitat in Yellville, and it's a haven for outdoor enthusiasts.

Managed by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, this sanctuary serves as an educational space as well as an outdoor playground.

Inside the sanctuary you'll find scenic trails that are perfect for hiking, birdwatching, and more.

Along the trails and throughout the ecosystem, you'll witness a plethora of gorgeous wildflowers native to the area, making this habitat a dream come true for nature lovers.

The kids will enjoy spending time at this conservation center as there are tons of opportunities for learning about different flora and fauna.

Not to mention that there are lots of activities that include fishing, archery, hunting, and more.

With its location along Crooked Creek, there are ample opportunities for water recreation as well. A float along the creek would be a pleasant way to spend the day.

Aside from all the fun excursions, you can expect to see lots of pollinators around. And if you love butterflies, you're certainly in for a delightful treat.

There are monarch butterfly larvae scattered all throughout the gardens and wildflower fields.

And you'll find lots of these baby caterpillars munching on their favorite treat, the Milkweeds.

Plus, you'll witness larger ones before they begin their transformation.

And once they transform, the habitat turns into a butterfly wonderland. If you're lucky and with some patience, you might be able to hold one of them.

If you ask me, I think that's pretty darn cool, and one of the best ways to connect with nature.

While monarch butterflies are the most common, there are lots of other species that you'll witness at Fred Berry.

They include the Falcate Orangetip butterfly as well as this pretty little Juniper Hairstreak butterfly that was spotted along the trail.

You'll be delighted to know that the center is free to visit, and you can explore the area on a self-guided tour.

Be sure to plan your visit accordingly as butterflies are more abundant during the Spring and Summer months.

So, do you love butterflies? If so, where is your favorite place to witness these beauties? Tell us in the comments below. And for more information about the conservation center be sure to visit the Fred Berry Conservation website.
