Nevada has Area 51 and here in Arkansas, we’ve got Blowing Cave! Though not as famous as its Nevada counterpart, Blowing Cave in Arkansas has attracted its fair share of curious visitors - and for good reason. It’s shrouded in mystery. One of the most popular legends is that the cave serves as an entrance to a secret underworld inhabited by a race of human-like beings.
Blowing Cave is in Cushman, Arkansas.
For many years, it was on private property and closed to the public. Now, though, thanks to new owners, it’s once again open to the public and ready to be explored.
The cave is the perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Not only does it boast miles of nooks and crannies to navigate, but it’s got a waterfall, too.
It’s not just the cave’s natural beauty that’s intrigued people over the years, though. The legends surrounding the cave are just as much to blame for its popularity.
Over the years, there have been lots of stories about people entering the cave, never to be seen again. But the strangest legend of all is that the cave serves as one of five entrances to a secret underworld.
Legend has it, accessing the underworld requires slipping through a hidden crevice a good way past the cave’s entrance.
The underworld legend came about after science fiction author, Richard Shaver, wrote about an underground race of beings with bluish, chalky skin.
Following the publication of Shaver’s story, a man named George D. Wright allegedly found a network of tunnels in Blowing Cave that led to the secret underworld Shaver wrote about.
Another author, Branton (a.k.a. Bruce Alan Walton), also wrote about the cave. In his book The Underground Empire, he claimed that while exploring Blowing Cave, he came face to face with a group of “human-like beings, who stood around 7 – 8 feet tall.”
