The Biggest Surprise You’ll Come Across While Hiking This Incredible Trail in Arkansas
Traverse this scenic trail which ends with a chance to walk along one of the largest natural bridges in the southeastern United States.
The Alum Cove Loop Falls Trail in the Alum Cove Natural Bridge Recreation Area of Arkansas features the word “cove” in its name, so it’s no surprise there are hidden nooks and crannies everywhere along the pathway. However, the most breathtaking element of unexpected natural beauty you’ll encounter along this journey is one of the largest natural bridges in the southeastern United States. Measuring in at over 130 feet long and 20 feet wide, this landmark is carved out of solid quartz sandstone rock and was formed over time by erosion from rain, wind, ice, and other elements.
The 1.1-mile loop or out-and-back trek (depending on your preference) is rated as easy/moderate. It’s a short hike that packs a lot of scenery into the journey—the beauty of this hike is that it seemingly boasts a little bit of everything outdoorsy. You’ll cross a bridge over a small creek, hug the base of the bluff line where you can explore numerous caves, see trickling waterfalls (I recommend hiking after it’s recently rained, so the waterfall is flowing strongly), and there’s even another smaller arch and plenty of other interesting rock formations. It’s a myriad of scenic natural beauty.
Once you reach the arch, there is plenty of room to walk across it—handrails have also been added, for safety. After admiring the arch, you can either turn back the way you came or continue along the looped trail. The looped trail will descend below the arch, cross a small stream, and follow the bluffs before returning to the Natural Bridge.
As always, on a hike in the wilderness, I recommend wearing sturdy shoes with plenty of grip (especially if you’re planning to traverse the area around the waterfalls—this can get slippery). Bring snacks, sunscreen, water (even though there is ample shade on the trail from the tree cover, it can get really humid here in the warmer seasons), and always follow the rest of the Leave No Trace principles. It can also be a helpful idea to bring bug spray, as this trail has been said to be littered with some bugs, including ticks and mosquitoes.
There is a bit of cell reception throughout the hike for emergencies. But it’s a well-trafficked enough trail, so you likely won’t have to worry about getting lost or stranded in the forest. Plus, the only time I ever really take my phone out during a hike is to capture the moment by using it as a camera to take pictures.
