Nestled on the banks of the Buffalo National River is the tiny town of Gilbert Arkansas.
This once bustling old railroad town was a hub for the Missouri and North Arkansas Railroad. Unfortunately, due to some tragic events as well as the construction of the highway system, the railroad eventually stopped its operations in Gilbert in 1946.
The tracks that ran along the Buffalo River were eventually removed and sold for scraps. Today, all that’s left is the railroad bed and a few structures that you’ll want to see for yourself.
The Old Railroad Trail is a 4-mile out-and-back trail that meanders along the Buffalo National River.
It’s located on the bed of the old railroad tracks, and the scenic trail is considered fairly easy with very little elevation change.
The multi-use trail is great for hiking, running, and horseback riding. Additionally, the picturesque trail is great any time of the year. In the summer, it is shaded, dotted with wildflowers, and covered by a canopy of trees.
However, during the colder months, when the leaves have fallen, you’ll be delighted by the stunning views of the majestic river.
As you trek along, you’ll appreciate all the picturesque terrain that was once part of the route of the railroad tracks.
While the river offers stunning views, you’ll also love the towering bluffs on the opposite side. The bluffs make a great backdrop for pictures in the area.
Aside from the river and the bluffs, you’ll also come across this storm drain along the way.
You’ll want to peek inside or feel free to step in for a closer look.
But the real prize along this trail are the towering concrete structures, which was the area where the railroad crossed the river.
These structures are a pleasant reminder of a railroad town and what used to be. They offer a tiny glimpse of an era lost in time. You've gotta trek this scenic railroad hike in Arkansas for yourself because it’s unlike anything you’ve witnessed before.
