This Arizona Trail Is the Perfect Way to Embrace the Cold (and Enjoy the Views)

Love winter hiking adventures? If so, grab some warm, cozy socks and let’s bundle up for this scenic winter hike in Arizona.

What I like most about winter hikes is that the trails are less crowded. Plus, there is nothing prettier than hiking in a dreamy winter wonderland — that’s pure magic! Of course, when the cold weather kicks in, many of us prefer to hunker down until the spring. And honestly, I don’t blame them! But some trails come alive under a blanket of snow, and if you ask me, they are worth the trek.

One such trail is the Abineau Trail to Bear Jaw Trail in Flagstaff, Arizona. With its stunning snow-covered landscapes, gorgeous Aspens, and rocky terrain, this scenic winter hike in Arizona is one you won’t soon forget. Let’s grab our gear and brave the cold for this outdoor hiking adventure.

Flagstaff in winter is known for skiing, snowboarding, and more. As the snowiest town in Arizona, many cold-weather enthusiasts flock here every year. While skiing is the top activity, there are so many hiking trails that are worth exploring and great for the entire family.

The Abineau Trail to Bear Jaw Trail is located inside the Coconino National Forest. At 7 miles long, it will take you about 4 hours (or more) to complete this loop trail. The scenic trail is beautiful all year round, but we enjoy it more when it’s covered under a blanket of snow.

Of course, you’ll need to dress warmly for this wintry trail. The average temperature could dip down to a low of 18 degrees, and it will be windy as you increase in elevation (1,890 feet for this trek, FYI). I recommend that you bundle up for this hike, but most importantly, keep your feet warm by wearing comfortable socks and a pair of sturdy hiking boots with microspikes. Trekking poles will come in handy too!

This trail is considered a challenging route, so I don’t recommend it for beginners. But if you and your family are avid hikers, you can certainly conquer this trek. It might be too strenuous for younger children, but older kids can definitely take on this hike too. Just remember to dress them in extra layers and make sure they wear proper footwear. Some of the rocky areas can be icy and slippery, so it’s better to be well-prepared for this winter adventure. And feel free to bring your fur baby along on this dog-friendly hike, but be sure to keep them on their leash.

If you love outdoor adventures in the winter, this hike is for you! Aside from the rocky, snowy landscapes, you’ll enjoy the stunning mountain views. The area transforms into a pretty wonderland, especially after a good snowfall. Timing is everything, so if you want to experience the magic of this hike, do it when it snows. Nothing is prettier than seeing the branches of the aspen and pine trees covered with powdery snow. It’s for sure something that’s worth bundling up to see.

The highlight of this trail is seeing Abineau Canyon, Humphreys Peak (Arizona’s highest point), and witnessing views of the Grand Canyon that’s over 50 miles away. If you get lucky, you could spot black bears, mule deer, and elk on the trail. So keep your eyes peeled for the local wildlife here. Between the stunning views, the enchanting landscapes, and the wildlife, this scenic winter hike in Arizona is worth the trek.
