Take A Magical Waterfall Hike In Arizona To Grand Falls, If You Can Find It
Grand Falls, also known as "Chocolate Falls," is a hidden natural wonder on Navajo land in Arizona, best visited in spring.
Almost every Arizonan knows about Grand Falls, but far fewer have actually visited. Tucked away on sacred Navajo land, this awe-inspiring natural wonder is a must-visit for anyone who loves waterfall hikes.
We've written about Grand Falls before, but the topic of how truly hidden it is has never come up.
This breathtaking natural wonder tucked away in a remote area of the Navajo Nation is one of the most incredible sights you'll ever lay eyes on—if you can find it, that is.
It all starts with a long drive down a bumpy red dirt road that seems to go on for eternity.
A high-clearance vehicle is ideal, but if you have a sedan, just make sure to drive really slowly (under five miles per hour).
When the road finally ends and you start walking, it's about a mile to the falls.
There isn't a designated "trail" per se; just a rugged path that cuts through the canyonlands.
Just follow the sound of rushing water, and you won't be led astray.
A fair amount of rock scrambling is required to reach the base of the falls, but the awe-inspiring views that await are worth the effort.
You can also view the falls from above, gazing in awe as they cascade effortlessly down the ancient landscape.
Fun fact: Grand Falls is also known as "Chocolate Falls" because of the brown color caused by mud from melted snow.
It's like a real-life Willy Wonka feature!
If you're new to hiking or just don't feel like embarking on a huge challenge, skip trekking down into the falls and just enjoy them from up above.
It's decidedly less tiring, but the views are no less stellar.
Spring is undoubtedly the best time of year to visit, as it's when the falls are flowing with their utmost vigor.
As summertime approaches, they start to dry up—still a beautiful sight, just slightly less so.
Please note: Grand Falls is currently closed, but we're eagerly awaiting the day it opens back up! You'll need a Navajo Nation permit to access the trail when visitors are once again permitted.
