We Did the Research, This Is Officially the Most Ironic Hiking Trail Name in Alaska

There’s absolutely nothing lazy about this trail.

I love lazy days. There’s nothing quite like waking up, knowing that you have nothing to do — you can enjoy a slow pace, take your time, and exert very little effort throughout the day. On my favorite lazy days, you’ll likely find me outdoors, taking a nap in my hammock, relaxing near a lake, or even enjoying a picnic at a park — you likely won’t find me on a hiking trail. But what about the Lazy Mountain Trail near Palmer? If the name is correct, it would be the perfect addition to my next lazy day. However, you’d be *very* wrong.

The Lazy Mountain Trail is quite the paradox. Despite the name sounding like a lazy hike and an easy stroll in the mountains, this trail is quite the opposite. In fact, it’s hard — really, really hard. This isn’t a trail for beginner hikers, but it’s certainly one that everyone should add to their bucket list because it’s beautiful and the views are one of a kind.

The Lazy Mountain Trail is a loop hike that is just under six miles. It may not seem too long of a hike but it’s steep. You will climb approximately 3,000 feet in elevation — this is a trail that will challenge you in so many ways.

You’ll find the trailhead just off East Huntley Road near Palmer, and you’ll notice the climb as soon as you step onto the trail. This Alaska hike will take you to the summit of Lazy Mountain and to reach the top, you’ll encounter many inclines and a lot of switchbacks. I recommend you take plenty of breaks along the way as there’s no need to rush. Stop and enjoy the wildflowers that may line your path, and be on the lookout for wildlife of all sizes.

Not too far into your climb, you’ll come to a fork in the trail. One route takes you along the Lazy Mountain Trail, which is steep and an intense workout. The other is the Lazy Moose Trail, which is also challenging but not as difficult. It’s a more gentle approach up the hill, but mentally prepare to walk up its many switchbacks. The Lazy Mountain Trail is much more straight to the point — there’s nothing lazy about it.

This is a trail where preparedness is key. Sturdy hiking shoes are a necessity and trekking poles are recommended. And while you may become quite hot as you climb to the summit of Lazy Mountain, you’ll certainly want a jacket at the top. The wind can be quite brutal here. I also recommend you watch the weather closely before you even begin your climb. Even in the early spring, you can expect to encounter snow on your journey.

But once you reach the top, you’ll realize that the climb was worth every step. It was worth the steep inclines and the brutal wind. It was worth the challenge to your mental and physical well-being. You will feel on top of the world.

Don’t be fooled by thinking this hike near Palmer, Alaska, is easy — there’s certainly nothing easy about it. However, I give you permission to be lazy the day following this hike. Believe me, you’ll certainly want a day of recovery.
