This is the site of some old Alaska mining camps. The hike will bring you past our state's great history before ending at two beautiful alpine lakes. This trail offers a glimpse into why the Last Frontier is so revered for its beauty.
You'll find really interesting remnants along the trail of these great old mining camps in Alaska.
In 1894, George Palmer discovered gold on the banks of Palmer Creek. This area became the site of both placer and lode mining.
The land here is home to both the famous Lucky Strike and Hirshey mines.
You'll also see the leftover pieces from the Swetmann Camp. This is one trail that's literally littered with Alaska history.
There are a few creeks to cross as you hike your way up this lake trail, so make sure you dress appropriately! Wear water-resistant shoes and, of course, watch your step. Rocks can be slippery.
The entire trail is about 2.7 miles out and back. It's accessible for most skill levels and is rated easy.
The hike is pretty clear and straightforward. The most difficult part about this trail is that it can be a little steep at times.
Overall, the elevation gain is about 921 feet. If you hit a steep section, try to keep pushing on. The views are absolutely worth the exertion!
Bring a picnic so you can take some time to enjoy the trail's summit once you reach the end.
