Take a Hike to an Alaska Overlook That’s Like Standing on Top of the World
Hike to the top of Mount Ripinsky in Haines, Alaska for picture-perfect views of the ocean, glaciers, and town below.
The lower 48 certainly has some amazing hiking trails, but I don't know if any of them can compare to those in the Last Frontier. Haines, in particular, has an unbelievable amount of things to do, and this Alaska overlook hike may take the cake. The trail takes you sky-high, with views of the ocean, glaciers, and the town below. This hike is on the more difficult side, but well worth the climb. Lace up your boots and head up the mountain for a top-of-the-world view in Alaska!
Where This Scenic Trail Is Located
The Mount Ripinski Trail is located in the Haines State Forest in Alaska. This lovely state forest in Southeast Alaska comprises over 260,000 acres of land and water, managed by the state. Today's hiking adventure is a 7.3-mile out-and-back trail with 3,200 feet of elevation gain, so plan accordingly. By all accounts, though, your effort will be well-rewarded. The views are simply unbelievable! It will take anywhere from five to six hours to complete, which is perfect for a Midnight Sun adventure.
What to Expect on the Hike
This summit hike is a challenge, requiring most hikers to spend about five or six hours on the trail. But by the end, you'll be rewarded with one of the most stunning views in Alaska. After locating the trailhead, marked by a gate and a small trail sign along Young Road, you'll begin your ascent.
This out-and-back trail meanders through dense rainforest via long switchbacks before ascending above the tree line, where you’ll be greeted with jaw-dropping views. There are wooden steps that lead past the steep, muddy areas. This will help with your climb, as you’ll rise up above 3,205 feet. The views start at around 2,500 feet, so if you don’t have time to finish it, you can still see some views. Be sure to pause and take in the scenery—it really is breathtaking! Once you reach the meadow, you’re around 2,500 feet high. You’ll still have another mile to go, and then you’ll be at the top!
Why The Views Feel So Unreal
Having climbed so many vertical feet, you'll truly feel like you're on top of the world. The mountains seem to rise right out of the water, creating an image that you'd typically see from an airplane and not a hiking trail! The combination of glacial views, the Takshanuk Mountains, and the glassy water stretching before you is almost surreal. It's also a fantastic way to admire the view of Haines.
Tips For Visiting This Alaska Overlook
As is the case with every hike in Alaska, preparation is key. First, make sure you plan to take enough time as you need. The hike may be more challenging than you anticipate, but overall it's an excellent trail for those who want to immerse themselves in Alaska's natural beauty. As you’re in Alaska’s backcountry, remember to be aware of the wildlife and changing weather conditions. Proper hiking gear can make or break your day, and having an AllTrails account handy for accurate maps can help. Pack layers, bring plenty of snacks and water, and be sure to pack out what you bring in. You’ll want to leave no trace to avoid disturbing local wildlife and to respect local communities.
With memorable views, a fantastic climb, and so much to love, this hike is nothing short of perfect. You’ll love every minute of the view from the top!
