Traversing a wooden boardwalk through an estuary, you’ll hike through the forest in Sitka before being greeted to meadow and mountain views under a delightful wooden shelter at the end of the hike. There’s one particular one that’s easy to do and offers plenty of beautiful scenery. The Starrigavan Estuary Trail is a wonderful, uncomplicated trail that takes you through the forests and meadows in Sitka.

It’s a straightforward out and back trail.

The entire trail is three miles long, and only gains about 150 feet in elevation. The trail is well marked and maintained, making it easy to follow.

The trail changes from boardwalk to gravel path, but both are easy to walk.

There are interpretive signs along the way to showcase some of the amazing things you’ll be seeing. And the area is full of wildlife, including birds, bears, and even salmon!

At the end of the trail you’ll be greeted by a stunning wooden shelter.

It’s the perfect spot get out of the rain or snow, and it offers beautiful views of the vistas beyond. Take a moment and rest, and soak in all of the beauty around you!

The trail starts at the Old Sitka Boat Launch area.

You’ll pass the bridge over Starrigavan River before coming to the US Forest Service campground on the right. There’s plenty of parking for your hike.
