There are some hikes where the journey is just as rewarding as the destination. The Bartlett River Trail will take you to a wild river but you’ll encounter so much more – unspoiled forest, gorgeous wildlife, and tranquil wetlands. The trail is a great entryway into the incredible Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and if you hike the whole trail, you’ll be treated to a vista of a pristine Alaska estuary.
The trail is located near Gustavus, a destination that can only be reached by plane or boat. To experience this amazing wilderness, it’s well worth the ticket.
The trail is in the vast Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve, a 3.2 million-acre natural park. It’s an incredible place and has been designated a binational UNESCO World Heritage Site.
To reach the trailhead, park at the Glacier Bay Lodge/Visitor Center and walk a half mile up the road. The trail is 6.9 miles but it's appropriate for any type of hiker – a serious explorer will enjoy the wilderness, while a casual walker or jogger can easily navigate the terrain.
While this hike doesn’t involve any serious climbing, it can get a little wet and muddy, especially near the water. Be sure to wear appropriate shoes for the conditions. You may want to also consider using gaiters and poles. Bug spray also is a good idea.
The trail traces an intertidal lagoon and it weaves through a hemlock and spruce forest. The trail ends at the Bartlett River estuary.
Keep your eyes open for wildlife; you may spot coyotes, moose, bears, and river otters along the beach – they are attracted by the salmon that run up the river in late summer. Be sure to look up - you may also see bald eagles circling overhead. You may also spot a porcupine!
The only hotel in the park is located near the trail. Glacier Bay Lodge offers rustic and cozy accommodations as well as nice views of the Fairweather Mountain range. Interested in more Alaska hikes? Here are some scenic trails that will lead you to more unforgettable places.
