The Farmers Almanac Predicts Winter 2020 In Alaska Will Have Mild Temps And Above Average Amounts Of Snow

Every winter is a little bit different, and the Farmer's Almanac predicts that Alaska Winter of 2020 will be filled with mild temperatures and lots of snow! Even though the state is large, they are pretty good about predicting correctly, and we can't wait for a winter that's warm enough to get out and play in!

It can be hard to predict weather for a state as diverse as Alaska.

We are the size of a third of the continental United States! That kind of land mass is hard to predict accurately for everywhere.

The Farmer's Almanac does a great job, however! They are more than 80% accurate for our state each year.

They also break up the state into sections to better estimate seasonal temperatures and precipitation. This helps as otherwise the areas are far too different to put out a correct estimation!

The most common abbreviations are: north (N), central (C), south (S), east (E), west (W), and elsewhere (EW).

When they forecast, the will use terms to refer to parts of the state like "north" which will mean "northern Alaska," "central" means "central Alaska," etc. All the long range forecasts they predict will be regional and not specific to a city, so be sure to read forecasts correctly!

Overall Alaska's weather patterns stay pretty similar every year, with only minor variations.

This year however, the entire winter is predicted to be much milder than normal! Expect the coldest period to be late December into January. This is a change from our late January and early February freezes!

The Alaskan wildlife will most likely be appreciative of the mild temperatures and easier grazing than normal.

The snowiest times stagger all around the state. In northern and central Alaska, it will occur early in November. In southern Alaska, mid to late December and January can expect to see the heaviest snowfall. And the panhandle will get lots of snow around early to mid February.

Overall, we can expect a lovely winter!

These are perfect conditions to get out and enjoy the winter in the best way possible. Break out your skis, snow shoes, and winter hiking boots, because the warm weather and plentiful amounts of snow will lure you outside!

No matter where you're traveling in the state you should expect great winter temperatures and snowy winter wonderlands.

We will have to see how the warmer temperatures and increased precipitation will affect our aurora borealis sightings. The best time to see the aurora is cold, dry evenings!
