This Canyon Hike Is One of Alabama’s Most Scenic Trails

Cane Creek Canyon Nature Preserve is a piece of paradise just south of the small town of Tuscumbia, Alabama. With breathtaking canyon views, vibrant wildflowers, waterfalls, and a rippling creek, there's something for everyone at the 693-acre nature preserve. Enthusiasts can dive deep into the area's geology and ecology, while those simply looking for a few minutes of peace can gaze at wildflowers and breathe in the fresh air. The Cane Creek Canyon Nature Preserve trail, a 6.5-mile moderately challenging loop, is a fantastic way to enjoy the area's exceptional features.

The hike begins in the southeastern part of the preserve, near the visitor's center. A parking area, picnic area, and restrooms are near the trailhead. The path winds north and then loops south, taking hikers past Cane Creek and other natural features. Karen's Falls is a stunning waterfall about halfway through the hike. The preserve's other waterfalls include Yellow Falls, Johnson Falls, Laurel Falls, Malone Branch Falls, North West Falls, and Farley Falls.

Hikers note the beautiful bluffs, rock shelters, and scenic views along the trail. With more than 700 feet of elevation gain over the hike, there are breathtaking views of the landscape. The trail is rocky and can be slippery and marshy, depending on recent weather and rainfall. The trail is also a fantastic place to view spring wildflowers. Their shades of yellows, purples, and pinks against the lush greenery make for amazing photos. Hikers also often see wildlife on the trail, and several note seeing deer and turkeys.

Cane Creek Canyon Nature Preserve is owned and managed by the Land Trust of North Alabama and is open to the public for free on weekends and federal holidays. The property was originally owned by Jim and Faye Lacefield, who purchased 40 acres in the 1970s and gradually expanded their property. The Lacefields donated the land in 2023, where it remains a diverse and abundant biological resource. More than 25 miles of trails weave throughout the preserve, allowing visitors to enjoy every corner.

Cane Creek Canyon Nature Preserve regularly hosts events for visitors. A 4.5-mile guided wildflower hike shows the preserve's beautiful blooms over about four hours. A guided night hike lets visitors see the preserve's glow worms; attendees make a donation to benefit the nature preserve's maintenance.
