The Amazing Campground in Alabama We Want to Visit All Year Round

So many different Alabama State Parks offer a mix of modern campsites and primitive camping options. With many features like modern bath houses or even on-site cabins, camping in Alabama has become something everyone can enjoy practically year-round. We found one such park that should be on your radar - Chewacla State Park in Auburn. With nine primitive sites and 36 modern sites, camping is one of the many different activities you can enjoy here. 

Spanning over 696 acres, Chewacla State Park is known for its natural beauty, featuring forests, waterfalls, and a peaceful 26-acre lake. The park has around 8 miles of trails, ranging from easy to moderate difficulty. These trails are popular for hiking, trail running, and mountain biking. Falls View Trail is one of the most popular hiking options since it leads directly to Chewacla Falls, a picture-esque man-made waterfall. Fun fact: the park’s trails are part of the Southeastern Climbers Coalition, making it a hotspot for rock climbing. So while you might not be rock-climbing year-round, it'll give you something to look forward to once the winter weather dissipates.

Mountain bikers flock here for the park’s award-winning trails, some of which feature adrenaline-pumping jumps and wooden features. The park also hosts a unique annual event: the Bo Bikes Bama charity ride, led by sports legend Bo Jackson to raise funds for disaster relief in Alabama. For movie buffs, Chewacla served as a filming location for scenes in the cult classic zombie movie Night of the Living Dead: Resurrection.

Camping at Chewacla State Park is the perfect blend of RV sites, rustic stone cabins available year-round, glamping safari tents, and primitive camping. The six stone cabins were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. These cozy cabins are equipped with modern amenities, including kitchens and fireplaces, making them a great option for a comfortable camping experience. The 36 full-service sites feature water, electricity, and sewer hook-ups, plus picnic tables and fire pits.

Reservations are recommended for campsites and cabins, especially during peak seasons. Plus, this park IS dog-friendly! So make sure to let your fur friends tag along as long as they are on a leash.
