If you ask 50 Montanans where to find the best burger in the state, you're likely to get 50 different answers...and the same can be said for steak.
That being said, we do believe we've found a top contender for both, along with an abundance of other delicious pub fare. Welcome to the Tall Boys Tavern, an incredible small town eatery you probably didn't know existed until today. But this is one place that's worth going on a road trip to try.
The Tall Boys Tavern is located in Hobson, which sits about 25 miles west of Lewistown and has a population of 219.
The tavern is only about five years old, but it's located in the old Murray Block building, which dates all the way back to 1910.
This building is the site of the former Hobson Opera House.
It has also served as a bank, a bowling alley, and even a roller skating rink. But we think it looks pretty great as a tavern.
The Tall Boys Tavern was established as a catering company first, by Liz Carr and her mother-in-law, Valerie. They opened the restaurant in 2015.
And while the ambiance is casual and laid back, the food is nothing short of gourmet. This is some seriously elevated pub fare.
The menu is full of tasty American classics, but you can never go wrong with a burger here.
The Certified Angus Beef patties and fresh toppings are irresistible.
You'll always see the classic hamburger and cheeseburger on the menu, but if you go at the right time, you might be able to order a specialty burger.
They also serve smoked brisket sandwiches and shaved prime rib dips, so if you love meat, you might have a tough time deciding what to order.
But if you're really hungry, we highly recommend ordering a steak dinner.
The coffee-rubbed ribeye is paired with duck fat mashed potatoes. If you've ever had duck fat fried anything, you know it's absolutely delicious.
The Tall Boys Tavern is open Tuesday - Saturday from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 a.m.
Grab a seat at the bar and you just might be joined by the resident ghost, the spirit of a young lady who once lived (or sang) upstairs...but according to Liz and Valerie, she tends to only come out at night.
