The Montana Hike That Leads To The Most Unforgettable Destination
Let’s face it — even the most adamant hiker can admit that the best trails in Montana come with some sort of a reward, like a waterfall or a sweeping view. And if you happen to be hiking in the Gallatin Gateway area, you can choose a trail that leads to one of Montana’s most visually stunning lakes.
We’re aware that these uncertain times are limiting many aspects of life. While we continue to feature destinations that make our state wonderful, please take proper precautions or add them to your bucket list to see at a later date. If you know of a local business that could use some extra support during these times, please nominate them here: onlyinyourstate.com/nominate

To reach the trailhead, take Highway 191 south into Gallatin Canyon. Drive 20 miles to the Lava Lake trailhead parking area, just north of the Gallatin River bridge.

But although the hike is strenuous at times, it's not extraordinarily difficult.

Even if you don't typically enjoy an intense hike, these views make it all worth it.

If you can brave the elements in autumn, the colors are fantastic.

And it's so beautiful, you might want to stay as long as possible.

Just make sure to pack plenty of water, snacks, and bear spray.
The Lava Lake Trail is one of Montana’s most beautiful hikes. These low-key trails also offer amazing payoffs.
