Exploring Montana is always best done in person, but when that isn't possible due to poor weather conditions, physical distance, or social distancing, a well-done virtual tour really is the next best thing. Not every Montanan has had a chance to see the Original Governor's Mansion in Helena, but now you can.
Montana's regal Original Governor's Mansion was built in 1888 by local entrepreneur William Chessman.
Helena had quite a few millionaires per capita back then, and William was no exception. He had the mansion built as a symbol of his wealth and influence through the Helena community.
The Queen Anne style mansion has had several private owners over the years.
Then, in 1913, it was purchased by the State of Montana as the first official governor's residence.
The mansion was home to nine governors between 1913 and 1959.
After that, the governor's residence changed to a two-story steel and brick house nearby. And this mansion has since earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.
The mansion is open for tours all year long, although their summer hours are much more expansive.
And while the guided tours are fun and fascinating, the virtual tour is pretty vivid and intricate.
We're lucky to have such a perfectly preserved relic from our state's history.
And we're even luckier that we don't have to go to Helena to enjoy it.
Guided tours of the Original Governor's Mansion are available by appointment only. But you'll never have to schedule an appointment to explore it online. Kick up your feet, get comfortable, and enjoy this virtual tour.
And while you're at it, check out these other virtual tours of some of Montana's most popular attractions and wonders.
