It's no secret that we love a good steak here in Montana — and we also happen to appreciate our local history. So when Billings' long-standing local eatery, The Rex, closed after more than a century, many a Montanan was saddened by the news. But after sitting vacant for two years, a local family breathed new life into the new space. And these days, Buffalo Block Steakhouse is a popular place.
For more than a century, The Rex, an old hotel, bar, and steakhouse, occupied the space at 2401 Montana Avenue.
The hotel, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, had quite a backstory and was a beloved local icon. When it closed for good a few years ago, a lot of people were upset.
Originally, most people, including The Rex's former owner, assumed the restaurant would be opening back up under new ownership.
But the sale failed to go through, and the building sat vacant for two years before the Larson family decided to open a new eatery there.
Buffalo Block at the Rex officially opened last summer, earning instant popularity.
The Larson family made plenty of memories at The Rex, and they wanted to honor its memory.
But rest assured, this new restaurant definitely has its own unique character.
The space will feel familiar, but it has been renovated and revamped to suit its new name.
The menu consists of plenty of steaks to choose from, ranging from a Prime Bone-In Filet Mignon to a 20-ounce Prime Dry-Aged Ribeye that has been aged for 30 days before it's served.
The menu also has plenty of other meaty options, like bone-in pork chops and roasted chicken.
If you enjoy seafood, you'll love the Surf section of the menu.
Start your evening with oysters on the half shell or order a pan-seared salmon dinner.
But whatever you decide on for dinner, you'll want to make sure to save room for dessert.
Just trust us on that one.
Buffalo Block at The Rex is open Monday through Thursday from 4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. On Friday and Saturday, they open at 11 a.m. for lunch and stay open until 11 p.m.
Reservations are accepted — and if you're coming on a weekend, you'll want to make one.
