Missouri’s bursting with hidden gems, places we often discover simply by accident or through the stories of others. If you drive by and quickly glance at this regal church, you might miss the hidden gem tucked within. What once housed a historic church is now the most unique furniture store in Missouri, and it’s definitely worth a visit. (You’ll have to book a visit, though.)
Every building has a tale to tell. If only walls could talk, the former church that now houses Unruh Furniture in Kansas City would certainly have plenty to say.
In its former life, the majestic building served as Westminster Congregational Church, beginning in 1904. However, the church closed its doors for good in 1995.
There the church sat, for sale and falling into disrepair. The Unruhs, however, saw the hidden gem that it was (and was still to become), and purchased it in 2015.
Unruh Furniture, a family run business, mirrors the uniqueness of the building in which it's housed. All of the furniture is custom and handmade, right inside the former church.
However, unlike traditional furniture stores, Unruh Furniture works with prospective clients on a one-on-one basis during an initial, private 30-minute appointment.
Because it's handcrafted and custom-made, all furniture is one-of-a-kind. The furniture, in fact, is designed so that it becomes a treasured member of the family, passed down from generation to generation.
