Celebrate the official start of winter with a refreshing sunrise solstice hike, a free interpretive program, at Mastodon State Historic Site in Imperial on Dec. 21, 2023.

Led by a seasoned guide, the winter hike will set off from the picnic area at the historic site at 7 a.m. If that sounds early, consider that the shortest day of the year will have just seven hours and 14 minutes of daylight.

Even though the short but sweet Spring Branch Trail clocks in at just .08 of a mile, be sure to dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty. The flat trail is comprised of packed gravel.
