12 More Places In Missouri That Make The Best Sandwiches Ever
previous post back in July, we brought you ten places in the state with great sandwiches. Now we are back with 12 more, many suggested by you, the OIYM readers!
We’re aware that these uncertain times are limiting many aspects of life as we all practice social and physical distancing. While we’re continuing to feature destinations that make our state wonderful, we don’t expect or encourage you to go check them out immediately. We believe that supporting local attractions is important now more than ever and we hope our articles inspire your future adventures! And on that note, please nominate your favorite local business that could use some love right now:
1. Smith’s Restaurant AKA Smith’s Short Shop, Collins
The Sandwich: The Giant Pork Tenderloin -- When they say giant, they mean GIANT. Unless you are a major eater, a half order is plenty. Pair it with their amazing onion rings and finish the meal with one of Smith’s delicious pieces of pie.

2. Maid Rite, Lexington
The Sandwich: The Maid Rite loose meat sandwich-- Maid Rite is an old chain with locations all over the Midwest. However, there are only three in Missouri. This addictive, yet simple ground beef sandwich is served up in a diner-like chain. Pair it with their French fries or freshly made chips and one of their delicious shakes.

3. Sub Shop, Springfield
The Sandwich: The Italian Sub (pictured)-- Pastrami, salami, cheese, mild peppers, lettuce and sub sauce all on fresh baked bread. Make it a meal and add your choice of chips or cookies and a 20-ounce beverage. Honorable Mention: Skinny Fighter Pilot—Turkey, pepperoni, cheese, lettuce, mild peppers and sub sauce.

4. Giant Tenderloin, Ecco Lounge, Jefferson City
The Sandwich: The Giant Tenderloin—An Ecco’s favorite, their giant pork tenderloin is grilled or freshly breaded and served golden brown. Pair it with a tree of onion rings. Honorable Mention: Grilled Blackened Chicken—topped with provolone cheese, sautéed onions and peppers (pictured).

5. The Z-Man, Joe’s BBQ, Kansas City
The Sandwich: The Z-Man—Tender slow smoked beef brisket, crispy onion rings, smoked provolone cheese and barbecue sauce on a toasted Kaiser roll. Pair it with coleslaw and potato salad.

6. Chicken Snack Ranch, Blues City Deli, St. Louis
The Sandwich: Chicken Snack Ranch-- Smoked pulled chicken, bacon, provel cheese, lettuce, tomato and buttermilk ranch dressing on an Italian Roll (substitute the cheese if you’re not a fan of provel). Honorable Mention: Memphis Stax—Smoked pulled pork, St. Louis (sweet and smoky) or Tennessee (spicy) barbecue sauce, topped with homemade cole slaw on an Italian roll.

7. Po’Boys, Broussards, Cape Girardeau
The Sandwich: The Famous Foot Long Po'boys-- Try the French Dip with Provolone and au jus, The Catfish, Shrimp or Oyster, The Steak or Chicken Philly (pictured), or the Cajun Turkey and Cheese. All Po’boys are available as either a foot long or a half foot, and are served with Cajun fries.

8. Steak Philly, Kline’s Restaurant, Rosebud
The Sandwich: Steak Philly—A classic steak philly seasoned with melted cheeses, onions, peppers and onions and served on a grilled hoagie bun. Pair it with Kline’s homemade chips. Honorable Mention: Loaded Biscuit Sandwich (breakfast platter) -- Two huge biscuits filled with hash browned potatoes, eggs, and sausage all covered in gravy.

The Sandwich: The Gerber—Open-faced ham sandwich with melted garlic butter and provel cheese. Honorable Mention: The Prosperity—Open-faced roast beef sandwich with melted garlic butter, smothered in gravy and provel cheese.

10. Pork Tenderloin Sandwich, Mama’s Burgers and Such, Sparta
The Sandwich: Mama’s Famous Pork Tenderloin—Hand cut, hand breaded and golden fried pork tenderloin served on a toasted bun with your choice of toppings. Pair it with Mama’s Sweet Potato Fries or Fried Dill Pickles.

The Sandwich: Roast Beef Sandwich-- Made with premium slow cooked beef, it’s melt in your mouth good! Finish off your meal with one of Sheila’s delicious desserts like the peanut butter pie.

12. Pork or Beef Baylee’s Jo’s Sandwich, Baylee Jo’s BBQ Seafood and Grill, Ironton
The Sandwich: The Baylee Jo’s Sandwich—Beef or pork piled high and topped with the sauce of your choice and served on Texas toast or a bun. Pair it with Baylee’s homemade spiral fries, coleslaw or potato salad. Honorable Mention: Chris’s Fried Catfish Sandwich—hand breaded in “Grandma Ann’s original breading.”
