These may not be the fine dining joints you see during restaurant week, nor will you find them advertised on TV alongside Chilis or TGIF. But holes in the wall are the hidden gems that make each city, small or big, unique in their own way. We've listed out 10 in Missouri that you should definitely check out for some amazing food if you haven't already.
1. YJ's Snack Bar
Tucked away in the Crossroads Arts District in Kansas City, YJ's appears to be a small convenience store from the '60s. The menu changes on the fly, so you'll never know what special to expect each week.
2. Grad School
Grad School in Springfield takes your average bar and grill burger to the next level. Bite into the Full Ride and you'll see why this dive has earned its Master's in bonafide burger grilling and dressing.
3. Fritanga
Spice up your taste buds with some delicious Nicaraguan delicacies from Fritanga. Most entrees on the menu range from $10-$15, so you won't break the bank experiencing a taste of Central America for dinner.
4. Tortilleria Perches
Cheap and delicious aren't two words you usually hear together when discussing restaurants. However, Tortilleria Perches has successfully met the demands of both with their authentic Mexican dishes and low prices. $1 Taco Tuesdays and $1 Tamale Thursdays? Now that's something you just can't beat.
5. A Slice of Pie
From the outside and even the inside, this dining establishment isn't much to look at. But once you take a bite into one of their pies, you'll realize why this is one of our top picks. Choose from a variety of delicious pies including coconut cream, apple, blackberry crumb and more. They also serve quiches and pot pies for breakfast and lunch if you're in a more savory mood.
6. Gyro Company
Gyro Company in St. Louis serves up some of the best gyros in the city. The service is quick, prices are low and the servings are plentiful. Need I say more?
7. The Brick
Ah, The Brick. A Kansas City must if you're ever in the Crossroads Art District. Try out the Oklahoma Dog if you're curious to experience the magic that is a fried hot dog. They also have a phenomenal Saturday brunch with all-you-can-eat biscuits and gravy, as well as $1 Bloody Mary's.
8. Cupini's
This family-owned restaurant serves some of the best Italian fare in Kansas City. In fact, it's so good that even Guy Fieri from the Food Network couldn't stay away. If you're a fan of gnocchi, head there on a Thursday and only pay $5 for a dish! Additionally, they offer cooking classes throughout the year.
9. HWY 61 Roadhouse
This dive in St. Louis manages to cook up both Missouri BBQ and New Orleans southern favorites all under one roof. If the live music wasn't enough to pull you in, their #1 seller, the BBQ Louisiana Shrimp, will be sure to make you stay.
10. Billy Bob's Dairyland
You may accidentally pass this place up in Branson seeing that it's attached to a gas station, but make sure to pull over and check it out for some mouthwatering diner food. The burgers are a must here and if you still have room, definitely try out the fried pies.
