A Trip To Missouri’s Frozen Cave, Graham Cave Is Positively Surreal
People generally tend to link adventure with warmer temperatures and summertime fun. Discounting getting outdoors and exploring during the winter means missing out on a whole lot of natural beauty. After all, wintertime offers a different view of even the most beloved of natural attractions – from waterfalls to lakes. A hike to this Missouri cave, especially when light snow tumbles down, will likely make you feel as though you’ve fallen into a snow globe.
Bundle up for your visit to Graham Cave State Park in Danville, a unique Missouri destination that’s strikingly beautiful in all four seasons. However, wintertime takes on an almost magical aura with the landscape dusted with snow.
Graham Cave State Park offers a unique glimpse into Missouri’s rich natural history. The masterpiece of the park is, arguably, Graham Cave. Artifacts from the cave provide evidence that humans lived there as far back as 10,000 years ago.
A National Historic Landmark, the cave is largely blocked off to visitors to preserve it. However, you can journey into the mouth of the cave to get a glimpse of the historic gems that lie beyond.
You won’t need a ton of time to check out the mouth of the cave and to snap photos, so set off on one of the scenic trails. The Graham Cave Trail tallies just .03 of a mile, is considered easy, and won’t take long at all.
If you have the time, follow the 2.5-mile Indian Glade and Graham Cave Loop Trail. The easy trail will lead you through the 369-acre state park that transforms into a winter wonderland when it snows.
The park features interpretive exhibits, so you can learn more about the cave and the surrounding land’s rich history. You’ll also get a glimpse into what life might have been like for the early inhabitants of the cave – at least from researchers’ points of view.
