The Abandoned Kansas City Workhouse In Missouri Is One Of The Eeriest Places In America

We've all probably driven or strolled past an abandoned building or two while out exploring. Oftentimes, those crumbling structures set our imagination on fire. If only those walls could talk...right? Well, in some cases we know the history of those long-forgotten buildings. This workhouse in Missouri, for example, has a long history, and its story may not be over.

You probably wouldn't expect to find a castle in Kansas City, but that's just what you'll pass when you're traveling down Vine Street.

Dating back to 1897, the castle, officially known as the Workhouse Castle, initially served as a city jail. Its inmates committed lesser offenses, including stealing.

Crimes that often resulted in time at the Workhouse Castle included unpaid debt and public drunkenness. The jail housed both men and women.

During their time in the castle, inmates would work. The jail itself, in fact, was built by prisoners.

The jail ceased operations in the early 20th century, but the castle itself went on to serve other purposes, including hosting special events and concerts.

However, by the 1970s, it was largely abandoned, left to fall into disrepair. For decades, it's given off an eerie vibe while attracting curious onlookers and graffiti artists.

You can no longer explore the grounds of the castle. Don't let that deter you from catching a glimpse from the road, though.

Chatter abour rehabbing the old castle has been ongoing for years, with most plans falling by the wayside.

The most recent plans give a peek at what could be in the castle's future, including retail shops and a community space.
